چکیده
The determination ab initio of crystal structures from powder diffraction data has been one of the major advance of modern powder crystallographyl. It is a consequence of the developments occurred in instrument resolution, powder pattern indexing and fitting techniques, e.g. the problem of peak overlap resulting from the collapse of the three dimensional pattern into one dimensional powder diffraction data has been circumvented by the advent of the Rietveld method. The impact of this important tool for studying the structure of materials which are only available in powder form is considerable, as shown by the increasing number of examples reported to date in literature (see, for example, ref. 2), and the possibility to use conventional X-ray sources has opening up the field to a much wider community of users. For structures with moderate complexity, the technique is becoming applied almost routinely, unless there is a strong limitation due to data quality, e.g. significant intrinsic line broadening arising from the microstructural properties of the material. In the reported examples, different radiation sources (X-rays, from conventional or synchrotron sources, or neutrons) were used for data collection, and a variety of diffraction geometries was also used. For example, a few years ago we reported the crystal structure of lithium diborate hydrate Lii~O~(OH).H~O solved ab initio from powder diffraction using the Debye-Scherrer geometry with monochromatic X-rays3. Diffraction data were collected with the curved Position-Sensitive Detector (PSD) from INEL. Although data were limited in sine/h by the PSD geometry, the structure solution was easily found. However, the angular limitation certainly influenced the precision on atomic coordinates. Recently, single crystals of the same material were obtained and the structure has been solved again from single-crystal diffraction data. The present study deals with a comparison and discussion of the results obtained by the two techniques.

Experimental Measurement and Kinetic Modeling of Ethane Gas Hydrate in the Presence of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Surfactant
Abstract: In this work, the kinetics of ethane hydrate formation has been studied experimentally and a kinetic model based on chemical affinity has been described for predicting the hydrate growth process in the stirred batch reactor at a constant volume. The experiments were done with both pure water and aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The effect of SDS on formation kineti...

Yellow starthistle (YST) (Centaurea solstitialis) is an invasive weed in the USA and a target of classical biological control. However, the precise geographical origin(s) of YST in the USA is not known. This study was conducted to learn whether the origin(s) of YST in California, USA could be determined on the basis of digital image analysis (DIA) of YST reactions to isolates of the rust Puccin...
متن کاملMulti-Component-Multiphase Flash Calculations for Systems Containing Gas Hydrates by Direct Minimization of Gibbs Free Energy
The Michelsen stability and multiphase flash calculation by direct minimization of Gibbs free energy of the system at constant temperature and pressure, was used for systems containing gas hydrates. The solid hydrate phase was treated as a solid solution. The fugacities of all components of the hydrate phase were calculated as a function of compositions by the rearranged model of van der Wa...

The present study has investigated the synthesis of copper nanoparticles via copper dismutation reaction in an aqueous solution and ambient conditions. Copper (II) chloride hydrate ( ), sodium oleate (SO), sodium chloride (NaCl) and ethylene diamine (EN) have been used as copper (I, II) ions source, surfactant, chloride ions supplier and ligand, respectively. Also, an amount of hydrochloric aci...
متن کاملA Fugacity Approach for Prediction of Phase Equilibria of Methane Clathrate Hydrate in Structure H
In this communication, a thermodynamic model is presented to predict the dissociation conditions of structure H (sH) clathrate hydrates with methane as help gas. This approach is an extension of the Klauda and Sandler fugacity model (2000) for prediction of phase boundaries of sI and sII clathrate hydrates. The phase behavior of the water and hydrocarbon system is modeled using the Peng-Robinso...
